Stump Grinding Pricing — By Diameter

Florida’s Stump Masters prices per stump, tied to diameter at ground level (not the original tree trunk — some species spread at the base). The grinder fires up at a price you’ve already approved in writing.

Stump Size Diameter at Ground Typical Price
Small Up to 12 inches $175–$275
Medium 12–24 inches $275–$400
Large 24–36 inches $400–$550
Very Large 36+ inches $550+ (quoted per job)

Stump Grinding Cost Per Inch — The Other Way to Quote

If you’ve called around, you’ve heard pricing quoted per diameter inch. In Florida that’s roughly $4–$6 per inch with a minimum charge in the $150–$200 range. We default to per-stump tier pricing because it’s cleaner — you know the number before we start — but if you want a per-inch quote on a specific stump, we’ll write it that way. Either method, the price is firm before the grinder fires up.

Multi-Stump Discount

The first stump pays for the truck, trailer, dump fees, 811 locate, and crew time. Each additional stump on the same visit is meaningfully cheaper. Six stumps on the same trip usually lands closer to a single-stump price than 6×. If you’re cleaning up a lot, ask for the multi-stump quote up front.

What Affects the Price

  • Diameter at ground level. The single biggest factor. Bigger stump, more wood to grind, more time, more wear on cutting teeth.
  • Wood density. Live oak, laurel oak, hickory, and ironwood eat carbide teeth faster than pine, palm, or camphor. Hardwoods cost more for the same diameter.
  • Surface roots. Live oaks throw 20-foot lateral roots in Florida’s shallow sandy soil. Grinding those flat adds time.
  • Access. Open yard is fast. Tight 36-inch gate, narrow side yard, pool-cage clearance, or carry-in over decking adds setup time.
  • Stump count. Multi-stump discount kicks in at stump #2 because the equipment is already on-site.
  • Depth. Standard 6–12 inches below grade is included. Deeper grinds (for paver patios, driveways, or foundations) add to the price.
  • Site protection needs. Pool cages, screened lanais, and irrigation-heavy yards need extra shielding.
  • Travel. We cover 7 counties at a flat zone rate. We’ll tell you up front if your address falls outside our standard service window.

What’s Included in the Price

  • Free written estimate — phone or on-site, your call
  • Sunshine 811 / Florida One Call locate when buried utilities could be in play
  • Site protection — plywood for driveways and walkways, shielding for pool cages, irrigation heads flagged
  • Equipment mobilization — truck, trailer, and the right grinder for the spot (full-size, narrow-frame, or tracked)
  • Stump ground 6–12 inches below grade with surface roots flattened
  • Basic cleanup — chips raked into the hole as backfill, or piled for you to use as mulch
  • Final walk-through with you to confirm the spot is exactly how you want it
  • 90-day regrowth warranty — if it sends up suckers, we re-grind free
  • Licensed and fully insured — certificate available on request

What’s NOT Included — Optional Add-Ons

The base grinding price gets the stump out and the spot raked. If you want a finished yard instead of a bare hole, here’s what we add on:

  • Same-day chip haul-away: $50–$150 add-on. Chips loaded out and removed entirely. See wood chip removal cost →
  • Spot grading: $250–$500 for a single low spot. Hole filled with clean topsoil, graded to match surrounding lawn. See grading cost →
  • Sod replacement: $0.85–$1.60 per sq ft installed depending on grass type. Stump-hole patch jobs under 100 sq ft have a $250 minimum. See sod cost →
  • Deeper grind: 18–24 inches for paver patios, foundations, or pool decks — quoted per job
  • Full restoration bundle: grind + chip haul + grade + sod, same crew, same day, bundled price (cheaper than booking each piece separately)

The bundle is what most homeowners want once they see the alternative is three trucks, three invoices, and a torn-up yard for a month. Ask for the full restoration quote when you call.

How We Quote — 3 Steps

1. Call

Tell us stump count, rough diameters, ZIP code, and what you want done with the chips. Most jobs get a phone quote in under 5 minutes.

2. On-Site Visit (if needed)

For tight access, multi-stump jobs, or full-restoration bundles we do a free on-site walk to measure access, confirm utilities, and lock the price.

3. Written Quote

Firm price in writing before we start. No hourly meter, no surprise add-ons, no “we ran into something extra.” The number on the quote is the number on the invoice.

Stump Grinding Cost FAQs

Why are some stumps more expensive than others the same size?

Wood density. A 24-inch live oak has roughly twice the cutting time of a 24-inch pine because live oak is one of the densest hardwoods in North America. Surface roots also matter — live oaks and ficus throw long laterals that have to be ground flat too. Species and root spread can swing the price within the diameter tier.

Do you charge by the hour?

No. We price per stump (or per inch if you prefer) with the price agreed before we start. Hourly pricing favors the contractor — the meter runs whether the job is going fast or slow, and you can’t budget the spend. Per-stump tier pricing protects you from surprise bills on tougher wood.

What’s included in the base price?

Free estimate, 811 utility locate, equipment mobilization, site protection, the actual grinding to 6–12 inches below grade, surface root grinding, basic cleanup (chips raked into the hole), final walk-through, and the 90-day regrowth warranty. Optional add-ons are chip haul-away, grading, sod, and deeper grinds for hardscape projects.

Why is there a minimum charge for small stumps?

The smallest stump in Florida still requires a truck, a trailer, a commercial grinder, fuel, an 811 locate, and crew time on-site. The first stump’s price covers that mobilization. The $175 minimum reflects what it actually costs to roll a commercial crew to your address — even if the stump itself takes 15 minutes to grind.

Is the multi-stump discount automatic?

Yes — tell us stump count when you call and we’ll quote multi-stump pricing from the start. The discount applies to any stump grouping reachable in a single visit. A yard with 8 stumps usually runs about 4× a single-stump price, not 8×.

Do you charge extra for hardwood vs. softwood?

It’s already baked into the diameter tier ranges. The bottom of each range (e.g. $175 for a 12-inch stump) is for softwoods like pine, palm, or camphor. The top of the range (e.g. $275 for a 12-inch stump) is for live oak, laurel oak, hickory, and other dense hardwoods. We confirm species during the estimate and lock the price in writing.

Are there hidden fees — trip charge, dump fee, fuel surcharge?

No. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. Travel within our 7-county service area is built into the quote. Dump fees for chip haul-away are built into the haul-away add-on price. There’s no fuel surcharge, no “tooling fee,” no shop-supplies line item.
