How many stumps?

Multiple stumps share mobilization, so per-stump cost drops with quantity.

1 Just 1 Single stump
2-3 2 – 3 Small cluster
4-6 4 – 6 Volume discount
7+ 7 or More Larger volume

How wide is the largest stump?

Diameter measured at ground level. Estimate the largest one.

Small Under 12 inches
Medium 12 – 24 inches
Large 24 – 36 inches
Very Large Over 36 inches

What kind of wood?

Hardwoods take longer to grind. Bottom of the range = softwood; top = hardwood.

🌲 Softwood Pine, palm, citrus, magnolia
🌿 Hardwood Oak, hickory, elm, maple
Mixed / Unsure A bit of both, or not sure
🌴 Palm Soft but fibrous — eats teeth

How accessible are the stumps?

Can the grinder roll up to them, or is there a gate or slope in the way?

🚗 Easy Access Open yard, near driveway
🏠 Moderate Fenced yard, gate access
Difficult Tight space, slopes, utilities
🔒 36″ Gate Only Walk-behind grinder needed

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Florida?

Florida stump-grinding jobs typically run $175 to $550 per stump, with most homeowners landing in the $275 to $400 band on a single medium stump. The calculator above gives you a personalized ballpark in seconds — here’s the pricing logic behind it.

    Stump Grinding Price by Diameter

    Stump SizeDiameter at GroundTypical Price
    SmallUnder 12 inches$175 – $275
    Medium12 – 24 inches$275 – $400
    Large24 – 36 inches$400 – $550
    Very Large36 inches and up$500 – $750

Per-inch, that’s roughly $4–$6 per inch of diameter in Florida, with a $175 minimum charge covering the cost of mobilizing a commercial grinder. The bottom of each range applies to softwoods (pine, palm, citrus, magnolia); the top to hardwoods (oak, hickory, elm).

    Multi-Stump Discount

If you have more than one stump, the per-stump cost drops because we mobilize once. The first stump covers the trip charge; the rest are priced closer to actual grinding time. Roughly:

    • 2–3 stumps: ~8% per-stump savings
    • 4–6 stumps: ~18% per-stump savings
    • 7+ stumps: ~28% per-stump savings

    Common Add-Ons

    Add-OnTypical Price
    Same-day chip haul-away$50 – $150 (per job)
Yard grading after grinding$300 – $1,200 (depends on area)
    Sod replacement (~50 sq ft patch)$45 – $80

For larger grading or sod jobs, see our dedicated cost guides: Yard Grading Cost and Sod Replacement Cost.

    What Else Moves the Number

    • Below-grade depth. Standard grind is 4–6 inches below the surrounding lawn. Deeper for replanting (8–12 inches) costs more.
    • Access. A 36-inch gate forces a walk-behind grinder, which is slower. Tight backyards, steep slopes, or roots near utilities all add labor.
    • Wood hardness. Oak and hickory wear teeth faster than pine or palm. Palm fiber is soft but eats cutters — we may rotate teeth mid-job.
    • Cleanup. Whether the chip pile stays on site for mulch, gets spread, or hauled away.

    Stump Grinding Cost FAQ

Do you charge per inch or per stump?
Both. We quote per stump using the diameter tiers above, but it works out to roughly $4–$6 per inch with a $175 minimum. The minimum exists because rolling a commercial grinder costs the same whether you have one 6-inch stump or one 24-inch one.
Is the price firm before you start?
Yes. Once we see photos or the site, we give a written estimate that’s firm. No surprise add-ons unless you ask for changes mid-job (deeper grind, extra cleanup, etc.).
    How deep do you grind?
Standard is 4–6 inches below the surrounding lawn surface, which is enough for sod or grass to grow back over. If you’re replanting a tree or installing hardscape, we go 8–12 inches deeper for an upcharge.
    What about the chip pile?
By default, chips and grindings stay on site — either piled neatly or spread back into the hole as fill. Same-day haul-away is a $50–$150 add-on depending on volume and access for the truck.
    Do you grind palm stumps?
Yes. Palms are soft but the fiber eats cutters fast, so we sometimes rotate teeth mid-job. Pricing is similar to softwood (bottom of the size range).
    What counties do you cover?
Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns, Seminole, Orange, Duval, and Clay. We grind stumps from Daytona to Jacksonville to Orlando — see service area.
